Cockroach Control

Cockroach

Although there are around 4,500 species of cockroaches worldwide, only 30 of those are found in human habitats, and only four are considered to be common pests. There are two main types of cockroaches found in Australia:

American, Australian and Smokey Brown Cockroaches

Are often found outside, but can make their way inside, e.g. if your windows and doors don’t have screens. Adults are approximately 1-1/2 inches long and reddish brown, with fully developed wings that cover the entire length of the abdomen. Both male and female are fully winged.

German Cockroaches

Are predominantly found inside the home. They can be caused by hygiene issues, and are more difficult to treat.  The adults are visually distinguished from other roaches by their smallish size, medium brown color, and two short stripes on the back of their head going from front to back. These stripes are located on the pronotum, a plate that covers part of the head in front and the base of the wings in back. An adult is long and slender, about 1/2 to 5/8-inch long and 3/16 inch wide.

Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will run away when exposed to light. They leave chemical trails in their faeces, which are followed by other cockroaches to discover sources of food and water. The chemical trails also transmit bacteria onto surfaces, which can pose a hazard for health and food safety.

Controlling Cockroaches

Although many homeowners struggle with do it yourself cockroach control remedies the results are often unsuccessful. Small problems can develop into large ones and this is when many people seek out the services of a pest control professional.

Termite Choices technicians are experienced professionals – they understand the habits of each species and use that knowledge when developing a control program for your home.

Treatment Methods

Your cockroach treatment will depend on the level of infestation and the type of cockroach. Termite Choices use a combination of bait gels and new generation low toxic pesticide formulations in order to remove cockroach infestations.

Bait gels are placed in potential harborage/feeding areas and act as a food source for cockroaches. After being consumed, the bait interrupts the breeding cycles via cockroaches transferring the bait to each other through their habit of grooming each other.

New generation low toxic bait gels and insect growth regulators are applied to cracks, crevices, cavities and the rear of appliances, especially in your kitchen.

When used properly and in conjunction with each other, both products provide effective long term control of cockroaches.
